21 Dead in Kano Road Crash: FRSC Boss Mourns, Urges Collective Action Against Road Carnage

The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has extended heartfelt condolences to the Kano State Government and families of victims following a fatal crash that claimed 21 lives on the Kaduna-Kano expressway.

The tragic lone accident occurred at Gadar Yankifi at about 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, 31 May 2025. The crash involved a Kano State Government-owned Coaster bus with registration number KN 041 A17, which was carrying 24 passengers — 23 male adults and one female adult.

According to preliminary investigations, the cause of the crash may be linked to fatigue and excessive speeding during a prolonged night journey.

Out of the 24 occupants, only three — two male adults and one female adult — survived with injuries and were rushed to the hospital for treatment. The remaining 21 passengers, all male adults, were confirmed dead at the scene.

Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed, in a statement issued by the Corps Public Education Officer, Assistant Corps Marshal Olusegun Ogungbemide, described the incident as devastating and called for urgent collective action to curb road carnage across Nigeria.

He urged fleet operators to ensure their drivers are well-rested and warned against nighttime driving under poor visibility conditions. He further stressed the dangers of excessive speeding and fatigue, especially during long-haul journeys.

While expressing deep sympathy to the bereaved families, Mohammed also commiserated with the Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, acknowledging the profound loss to the state.

He called on all road users to adhere strictly to traffic regulations, ensure regular vehicle maintenance, and prioritise safety at all times.

“The FRSC remains committed to its mandate of promoting road safety and reducing crashes. We will continue to identify and address safety concerns to protect lives and prevent future tragedies,” the statement read.
